I think you can be much truer to real emotions and reality by creating something that on the surface seems artificial but, by then putting everything together in the end, is much more impactful than trying to use realism in every individual element of the film.
Have you noticed in your past experience that your kind interpretations were almost always truer than you harsh one?
I think there's no truer and more pure purpose than to be able to refine your art to a point where you feel it's as possible as it can be.
Exmoor and Dartmoor are sacred, magical places. You find a truer side of yourself there.
There's a certain truism that you can't be self-conscious in comedy.
It's a truism that you can investigate anything forever.
Well, you know what, I'm 60 years old, and I've been interested in politics since I was on my daddy's knee. During the 1948 election, we were praying for Truman. I know a lot about politics.
When you first saw 'The Truman Show,' did anyone else walk around for the next week not picking your nose just in case?
The very essence of leadership is that you have to have vision. You can't blow an uncertain trumpet.
The nerves are a problem on trumpet, because when you mess up everyone can hear it. Just remember most people are too polite to say anything about it. That should calm your nerves.
What I think is key is everybody has to approach a relationship from a realistic standpoint. Everybody has stuff in the back of a trunk. The key is what kind of stuff can you deal with. There are some women who can deal with a relationship that I can't.
If you're going to start a company, it's not going to be in the millions of dollars, but it's going to be something - for a lot of these kids - out of the trunk of their car, the same way that I did.
My conception of it was that in a normal film you have a story with different movements that program, develop, go a little bit off the trunk, come back, and end.
Cut your arms and legs off, and you're left with a trunk, which you need to be as strong as possible. It's easier to push over someone who is tall and skinny than someone short and stocky. That's why we work everything from the calves to the neck.
There's nothing sexy about skin and bone. You gotta have some junk in the trunk.
As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live.
You either have to find a way to be really creative materially, or you better have a trust fund. And, last I checked, I didn't have a trust fund.
Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you'll have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either of them might run out.
There's obviously nothing wrong with selling your art - only an idiot with a trust fund would tell you otherwise. But it's confusing to know how far you should take it.
Reporters used to be blue-collar; at the Globe now, it's practically required that you have a trust fund.
