To discover the Kingdom of God exclusively within oneself is easier than to discover it, not only there, but also in the outer world of minds and things and living creatures. Beispielsweise sollen wir nicht einfach je nach unseren unmittelbaren Präferenzen, Leidenschaften und Wünschen durch unser Leben trudeln, sondern uns Konzepte eines für uns guten Lebens machen, die wir vor uns selbst und vor anderen begründen können. Wenn wir uns fragen, welche Art von Person wir sein und welche Art von Leben wir führen wollen, dann muss die Antwort konsistent (= widerspruchsfrei) sein und argumentativ gut gestützt werden; denn sie sollte einer gründlichen Kritik standhalten können. Das ist der sokratische Standpunkt.

The difference between sex and love is like the difference between an education without a philosophy of life and one with such an integrating factor. A system without a philosophy measures progress in terms of substitution. Spencer is substituted for Kant, Marx for Spencer, Freud for Marx. There is no continuity in mental development, any more than the automobile grew out of the horse and buggy. But in a Christian education, there is a deepening of a mystery. One starts with a simple truth that God exists. Instead of abandoning that idea when one begins to study science, one deepens his knowledge of God with a study of the Trinity and then begins to see the tremendous ramifications of Divine Power in the universe, of Divine Providence in history, and of Divine Mercy in the human heart.

We need a sense of the unity of life and of humans for the sake of human welfare and for the survival of the planet. We need a sense of unity with the cosmos so that we can connect with Reality. But we also need a sense of individuality, for the sake of our own dignity and independence and of the loving care for others. We need it to appreciate each natural form, each animal and plant, each human person in their uniqueness.

The cost of our goals is the life we exchange in pursuit of them and because the outcome of your attempts can never be guaranteed, you owe it to yourself to enjoy the pursuit itself.
