Holiday Books - Winter Reads 2019

Holiday Books - Winter Reads 2019

Every time the holiday season rolls around, we love to get stuck into a good book. It’s the perfect way to kill some time when it’s cold outside, especially when the bulk of the holidays are over and everyone’s just sitting around and waiting to get back to work.

But what kind of stuff is best to pick up as we’re heading into the New Year and beyond? Well, that depends upon the kind of books that you like to read, but to get you started we’ve worked on a list to help to inspire you. Here’s what we’d recommend.

1. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Let’s get this one out of the way because it’s the most obvious. Sure, Christmas might be over for this year, but this one will only take you a couple of days and alternatively, you can put it on your list for next year. Written by Charles Dickens and following the iconic character Ebeneezer Scrooge, this is the book where many of our Christmas traditions come from.

2. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo

This non-fiction book by Marie Kondo made headlines this year after the success of her accompanying Netflix series, and it’s the perfect read if you’re thinking of the new you as we embark into a new decade. You can take what you learn and toss out everything that doesn’t bring you joy, ultimately living a happier life by surrounding yourself with less junk.

3. Northern Lights by Philip Pullman

This book is the first in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, and indeed the whole trilogy belongs on this list. It captures many of the magical vibes that you know and love from Harry Potter, but with a unique spin and a highly creative world that few other authors could match. Much of it is set in the snow of the far north, and there are talking armoured bears – what more could you want?

4. A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson

A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson

This book by Bill Bryson covers pretty much exactly what it sounds like. In fact, it aims to cover everything that’s happened since the instant of the big bang, and as such it’s an interesting mixture of both a science and a history book. That means that it might not be the right book for everyone, and indeed if nothing else it’s long enough to put most casual readers off picking it up, but it’s a great book to keep you entertained while teaching you something new on every page.

Conclusion

Of course, these are just a few of the books that we’d recommend to get you started, and if none of them take your fancy then don’t give up – just spend a little time asking for recommendations and doing your research. And of course, if you’d like to share your recommendations then be sure to do so with a comment. Happy reading!
