Lois Lowry

Lois Lowry

Lois Lowry is a U.S. writer. She is the author of several books for children and young adults, including The Giver Quartet and Number the Stars. Lowry was born in Hawaii, but since her father was a career military officer - an Army dentist - she lived all over the world. Growing up as a middle child in a family of three children, she was a solitary child who lived in the world of books and her own vivid imagination. She is known for writing about difficult subject matters and complex themes in works for young audiences. Her writing covers varied content and styles, with the general theme being human connections. Her writing has been heavily influenced by personal tragedies, such as the early death of her sister. Lowry is now a grandmother and currently lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, but she also spends a good deal of time at her farmhouse in Maine.
