She grew up in Enugu, Nigeria, where her father worked as a professor of statistics at the University of Nigeria and her mother was the University's first female registrar. She completed her secondary education at University of Nigeria Secondary School and at the age of 19, left Nigeria for the United States. In 2003, she completed a master's degree in creative writing at Johns Hopkins University. She is the author of award winning novels Purple Hibiscus, Half of a Yellow Sun, and Americanah. Adichie divides her time between United States, and Nigeria, where she teaches workshops on writing.
